Goalkeeper catching techniques
The "W" or diamond catch
Catching the ball is a basic goalkeeping technique, and setting the hands in a "W" or diamond shape is the ideal method to receive balls arriving at chest height or above.
What should you consider?
- Get in line - light on your toes, move your feet, and keep your body behind the ball.
- With your thumbs and forefingers, make a "W" or a diamond shape behind the ball.
- Spread out your fingers.
- Keep an eye on the ball as it enters your palms.
- Lean forward slightly and catch the ball in front of your body.
- If you're going to jump, do so on one leg and catch the ball at the highest point.

What you enlist the help of your players to do?
Each player bounces the ball multiple times from around chest high into the ground and catches it on the way back up.
Players now twist their upper bodies to the left to bounce the ball, then back to the center for a second bounce, and finally to the right for a third bounce, keeping their feet grounded. The players continue to switch positions.
Increase the pace after increasing the amount of bounces in each position.
When catching, make sure your hands create a "W."

Play 1v1 in a 10x15m grid with goals at opposing ends, though the distance varies depending on the players' age and competence.
Players take turns attempting to score by kicking or throwing the ball past the goalkeeper.
If a goalkeeper saves the ball, they have a chance to score from the position where the ball was saved.
If each goalkeeper spends more time on deflecting than catching skills, use poles to narrow the width of the goals.
