 Covering defender

It's necessary for a defender to have backup in the form of a second or 'covering' defender while putting pressure to a ball-carrying attacker

That way, even if the attacker beats the first defender, the attacker's progress will be stopped by the second.

What is the objective of this plan?

Providing protection for a teammate who is facing an opponent.

Defending against attackers who are attempting to score.

Predicting the opponent's play.

What should you consider?

If the first defender is beaten, the covering defender should be able to make an effective challenge.

Stand on the goal-side of the first defender at a modest angle.

Assist your teammate to "get closer" or "push them down the line" by communicating early and clearly.

Set-up

Each group has four players: two attackers and two defenders.

Each playing field is approximately 10×30 meters long.

10 minutes of warm-up

10 minutes of session

15 minutes of developments

15 minutes of game situation

10 minutes of warm down.

What you get your players to do?

As a server, attacker 1 sends the ball to attacker 2.

Attacker 2 tries to get to the finish line with a dribble.

The attacker is challenged by Defender 1.

DEfender 2 provides cover

To organize the defenders should every defender challenges the other defender must cover him.

Development

Attacker 1 joins the attack after the first pass is made, creating a 2v2 situation. The covering defender will now have to flip duties based on who is closest to the ball, with the main defender becoming the covering defender and vice versa.

Now that the game is 2v2, the defenders must continually adapt.

Situation in the game

In a 30×20 meter area, play a 4vs4 match with goalkeepers. Encourage both teams to shoot whenever possible, since this will encourage players to close down and cover their opponents.
The defending team in a 4v4 must make multiple choices and communicate efficiently.

What should I say?

"Show them broad"

"Connect to one another"

"Stay on your feet".
